CLUN LOSE AGAIN!

PONTYCLUN 0   AFC BUTETOWN 1

AFC Butetown were the visitors to a bright and sunny Ivor Park on Saturday for a South Wales Alliance League fixture.

Pontyclun kicked off playing towards the Cowbridge end of the ground. The opening stages saw Pontyclun enjoy the larger share of possession but it was the visitors who had the first real chance of the game in the fifth minute when their forward shot straight at Andrew Ringsell in the Pontyclun goal from the edge of the area.

Pontyclun’s first real chance came three minutes later but Tom Tweedy could only shoot tamely at the Butetown keeper from the left hand side of the area. Pontyclun were made to pay for this miss when Butetown took the lead in the tenth minute. The ball was played into the Pontyclun area only for Oli James to slice his attempted clearance high into the air. When the ball came back to ground again Butetown’s Brian Chowdrey was on hand to strike the ball past Andrew Ringsell from close range.

A minute later Pontyclun almost drew level. A long ball forward found Tom Tweedy on the left. His looped ball into the Butetown area found the head of Harry Flint but unfortunately the ball just went wide of the post.

The game then entered a quiet period with neither side really threatening the other’s goal. Over the course of the rest of the half opportunities fell to Tom Tweedy, Chris Darlington and Aled Davies but the visitors’ goal remained intact and the half time whistle sounded with the visitors leading by a goal to nil.

HALF TIME: PONTYCLUN 0 AFC BUTETOWN 1

The opening stages of the second period followed a very similar pattern to the first. The first real chance of the half came in the 58th minute when Pontyclun were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Butetown area. However, Matthew Trigg could only sent his effort just over the bar.

Pontyclun again came close to securing an equaliser in the 65th minute when Tom Tweedy broke down the wing before sending a low ball across the Butetown area. The onrushing Aled Davies picked up the pass and got in a stinging shot which flew just over the bar.

In an attempt to secure an equaliser manager Barry Quinn rang the changes sending on Sam Shilton and Jacques Tertois for Chris Darlington and Jamie Williams respectively. However, despite Tertois making his presence felt upfront Clun were unable to secure an equaliser and a rather tame game ended with Butetown winners by a goal to nil..
