Pontyclun Football Club will be hosting their Annual Gentlemans Evening on the 5th June at Pontyclun Athletic Club. The Club are delighted to announce that this years guest speaker , will be ex Man Utd and Leeds player, Lee Sharpe.

Lee Sharpe began his footballing career at Torquay United, and in his first season with them, after only 16 games, Manchester United noted his potential and swooped to sign him for £200,000, a record fee at the time for an YTS player.

He soon broke into the first team, initially playing out of position at left back before replacing Ralph Milne as left-winger in the 1990–91 season. He played a key part in United’s success in the European Cup Winners’ Cup that season, and he scored a hat-trick against Arsenal at Highbury in the League Cup with United eventually winning the game 6–2. Lee himself cites this as one of the best memories in his footballing career. During eight years at Old Trafford he played 265 games and scored 36 goals.

The night promises to be one of the best with comedy and compering provided by Tank Sherman and some surprises in store for the auction, which last year included signed shirts from Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez.

Tickets are £35 and include a 4 course meal. As always they sell out fast with a large proportion sold to returning happy guests!

Cup Finals Galore!

Pontyclun FC’s purple patch in the cups continues with the Reserve Team qualifying for both cup finals that they have entered this year, the Bernard Martin Cup and the Greyhound Cup. Convincing victories against, firstly Bush Bluebirds dispatching them with a 5-2 win and then a 2-0 shutout against Nelson Cavaliers sees the Reserves reach both Cup Finals for the first time.

These two convincing victories were a testament to the squad that we currently have, as due to this being a cup competition many players were ineligible to play as they had been involved in the First Team squad’s cup fixtures earlier in the season. Despite this, and even for one fixture Reserve Team Manager Peter Shilton having to don the gloves (playing like his namesake), they came through both games convincingly and now have two cup finals to look forward to.

The first of these finals, the Greyhound Cup, will be played on 24th April at Llanbradach Park against top of the table Penrhos at Llanbradach Park, kick off 6pm. We are hoping to take a large contingent of fans with us which will include all of the first team squad making the effort to support the boys. If you’d like to watch but are struggling to get to the venue then contact enquiries@pontyclunfc.com and we can look to arrange a lift.

The Bernard Martin Cup will be played against Cwrt Rawlin on Tuesday 5th May at Llanbradach Park, kick off 6.15pm. This fixture was postponed and the re-arranged date has yet to be broadcasted.

The Futures Bright, The Futures Yellow

Pontyclun FC’s 1st team are delighted to announce that the club have reached the W.John Owen Cup Final to be played on May 2nd against AFC Bargoed at White Tips Stadium, home of Treforest FC. The club sealed victory with two last gasp goals to bring the scores level against reigning champions Trefelin BGC. The match went into extra time where the teams couldn’t be split and the Clun won the shootout 5-4 with 5 excellently taken penalties.

This is the 1st teams first opportunity to win silverware since the Welsh League Division 3 winning side of 2002/2003 (pictured above), which current Captain Craig Williams, current First Team Manager Barry Quinn and current First Team Coach Adrian James were all a part of. Since that season the club has experienced some highs and more recently some lows but reaching this Final is a statement by the current team that good times lie ahead. What made the victory more pleasing was that all of the starting 11 were locally based players who came through the clubs youth system or  have been involved with the club from a young age.

First Team Manager Barry Quinn was delighted with the win saying,

“It is an absolute privilege to manage the current crop of players we have at Pontyclun. Attitude and spirit is everything, we cannot wait for the Cup Final”.

Kick off is at 2.30pm, 2nd May at the White Tips Stadium (Dan-y-Bryn Rd, Pontypridd CF37 1RX). This is a great opportunity to get behind the club and support the community team. We hope that all involved with the junior setup will attend and encourage new supporters to come and see what a positive impact the club has on our village.  There is a supporters bus being put on to attend the game which if you’d like to travel on please contact Phil Sweet on philip.sweet693@btinternet.com or put your details in to the form below, our hardcore group of fans have filled most spaces but there are still a few places left up for grabs.

The bus will be leaving Pontyclun Athletic Club at 12.30 and returning from Treforest at 6.15 at a cost of £5. Hopefully we’ll see a large number of the 2002/2003 team in attendance as well!

Also congratulations to our Reserve Team who reached the Final of the Greyhound Cup by beating league above Bush Bluebirds 5-2 at Ivor Park with the evergreen club legend Pepe Mele scoring a “worldy” to wrap up the tie. The date and Final are due to be announced shortly, in the meantime the Reserves have another Semi-Final this weekend against Nelson Cavaliers in the Bernard Martin Cup again at Ivor Park. As the 1st Team have no game come down and support the boys!

C’mon Yellows!

After successfully defeating Tynte Rovers 5-0 in the Quarter Final of the W.John Owen Cup, Pontyclun’s reward is an away Semi Final tie with last seasons SW Amateur League Winners Trefelin BGC on the 14th March.

It has been some years since the team has added to the trophy cabinet and this is most likely their best opportunity to add to it this season. With the team filled with products of the junior section within the club it was agreed that this would be a good opportunity to rally around the club and therefore  a supporters bus has been arranged for the game to support the boys.

We expect the usual cohort of “Pontyclun Ultras” to travel to the game but hope that more people within the club and community will take this opportunity to support the First Team. It is sure to be a good day out, if you are interested in supporting the boys then please contact First Team Manager, Barry Quinn, on 07732 855882 or email enquiries@pontyclunfc.com .

Barry Quinn, First Team Manager, thanked Neil saying,

Pontyclun Back To Winning Ways

Pontyclun got back to winning ways after an extended Christmas break due to the weather. After a disappointing end to the 2014 year in the league Barry’s Boys were keen to make a strong start to 2015 and where better to start than against unbeaten league leaders Merthyr Saints.

With a number of players out through suspension and First Team coach Adrian James being unavailable through illness it was always going to be a tough ask. Being reduced to 10 men inside 10 minutes didn’t help but despite this the team produced one of their best performances in some time to fight back to win 2-1 in the dying minutes.

Due to two disappointing defeats at the end of 2014 the league has been put out of the boys’ hands, however with a few games left against the top sides the Clun could definitely have an impact on where the league ends up, and you never know stranger things have happened!

Pontyclun Top but Tougher Tests Await

Pontyclun once again took centre stage, in the amateur league round up in the Western Mail, as for the first time this season they moved to top of the table. A convincing home win over local rivals Treforest took them to the top whilst doing the double over their neighbours at the same time.

The victory extended the Clun’s unbeaten run to 8 games with 7 wins and 1 draw in that time and some great football was put on show for the local supporters, with a good turnout at Ivor Park. Craig Williams took his goal tally to  7 for the year whilst Joel Woodington remains top scorer taking his tally to 15. Manager Barry Quinn and First Team Coach Adrian James were delighted with the win but are aware that tougher tests await their young side. The last two fixtures of November see Pontyclun firstly visit second placed Aber Valley and then they host title contenders and last years champions Trefelin on the 29th November.

Both games could be described as “six pointers” in their bid to return to the Welsh League as the league begins to take shape as we approach the winter break.

Ground Improvements Fundraiser

Saturday 15th November the club are holding a fundraiser towards further ground improvements. We welcome the fantastic vocalist ‘Rhiannon’ (dubbed the Welsh Rhianna) and disco to Pontyclun Athletic Club from 7.30pm.

All proceeds for the night go towards the fundraising appeal in place to ground improvements . Many of you will be aware of the vandalism issues we have had over the last several months, and as we put the final touches on our clubhouse we need to ensure all surrounding areas meet the high standards we have now set.

It promises to be a great night and we hope that everyone in the community makes the effort to attend and support your local club!

Tickets are £5 and can be purchased on the door or reserve your tickets by contacting Phil Sweet on philip.sweet693@btinternet.com .
