Woodington Player of the Round

Pontyclun forward Joel Woodington has been named the FAW JD Welsh Cup Round Two Qualifying, ‘Player of the Round’ after winning a poll on Twitter.

The Former Cardiff City Performance Analyst scored a hatrick in Pontyclun’s 6-2 win over fellow Division Three side Caerau as they progressed to the First Round proper.

Woodington was Pontyclun’s top goal scorer back in the 2014/2015 season before being unavailable to commit to Saturday games after work commitments but has since returned to the fold and impressed for Pontyclun, helping them to promotion to the Welsh League last season.

His goals have given Pontyclun a home tie in the next round against local rivals and Cup debutants Pencoed Athletic, with the game set to be played on the weekend of the 6th October. After receiving the award, following the vote on Twitter, Joel took time out to comment on winning the Player of the Round, highlighting the quality of the Pontyclun squad.

“It’s great to receive the award and be acknowledged for one of my finest hat tricks. But it serves only as a testament to the team we have here. Our squad has incredible talent and it has unity is like no other. That is demonstrated alone by the fact that a different player has set up every goal we scored so far this season. Thanks to everyone that went out their way to vote, and those that support the club week in, week out. I hope we can put on another terrific display in the next round.”

The team have been drawn into the Welsh Reserve League West Division, a tough division where they will face the likes of ; Cambrian & Clydach, Afan Lido, Penybont & Port Talbot Town. All of these are well established clubs within the Welsh League setup with 2 of the above having held Welsh Premier League status within the last 5 years.

Stonecraft are a local firm with a fantastic growing reputation. They can currently be found on Facebook under ‘Stonecraft Garden Builders’ or can be contacted via stonecraftenquiries@yahoo.co.uk or 07891 306678. Second Team Manager and Club Secretary, Peter Shilton thanked Stonecraft saying;

“The boys are absolutely delighted that the team over at Stonecraft have shown their support to the side this year. Last year was a great year for the club with the reserves winning their league for the 3rd time in 4 years. It will be a real step up for the club this year for both sides and with a great squad and club ethos we are confident both will handle the step up, also with some 16 year olds coming into the fold it is a great standard for them to begin their senior career and great to see local players coming through.

Everyone at the club would like to thank the Stonecraft team and looks forward to seeing them down at Ivor Park throughout the season. Once again the club recognise how lucky we are to be part of a great community that always looks to get behind their local club.

Reserves Clinch Title

Pontyclun FC’s Reserve Team are once again Taff Ely & Rhymney Valley Divison 1 Champions following a 4-2 victory over Treforest meaning the they cannot be caught with two fixtures left of the season.

The reserves have won this league numerous times since being unable to compete in the Welsh Reserve League and it is fitting that they once again are victorious in their final season in this league.

The club have been fortunate to have a large squad over the season with great numbers throughout in training and this strength in depth is put on show by the quality of  play by the reserve side.

A big thank you to Reserve Team Manager Peter Shilton for all the hard work he has put in this year and special mention to Sam Shilton who moved to over 30 goals for the season, a great achievement.
