THREE GOALS AND ANOTHER THREE POINTS

PONTYCLUN FC   3   CARDIFF CORRIES  0

Cardiff Corries were the visitors to a sunny Ivor Park on Saturday for a South Wales Alliance League Premier Division fixture.

Pontyclun in their change strip of navy and red got proceedings underway by kicking towards the Cowbridge End of the ground. After a quiet opening the first real chance of the match came in the 5th minute when Tom Tweedy was played through one-on-one with the Corries goalkeeper but he could only loft his effort over the bar.

Although enjoying the vast majority of the possession Pontyclun had to wait until the 14th minute for their next opportunity. Craig Williams advanced down the right to the by-line before squaring the ball into the area but as the ball rolled across the Corries’ six yard area no Pontyclun player was on hand to turn it into the net.

In the 22nd minute Pontyclun finally made all their possession tell when they opened the scoring. A good cross from the by-line on the right by Sam Morgan was latched onto by Jamie Williams. After the Pontyclun forward had had a couple of close range efforts blocked by the Corries keeper the ball found its way to Joel Woodington three yards out who cleverly back-headed the ball into the net.

Two minutes later Clun had a strong claim for a penalty turned down when the advancing Sam Morgan appeared to be brought down in the area but referee Nigel Richards waved away the protests.

Although Pontyclun continued to enjoy the majority of possession for the rest of the half they were unable to add to their score and the interval arrived with them leading by a goal to nil.

Right at the start of the second half the Corries’ goal had a narrow escape when a Corries defender back-headed a cross over his own bar for a corner. In the 50th minute Pontyclun finally made their pressure tell when they doubled their lead when a low cross from the by-line on the left from Joel Woodington found an unmarked Tom Tweedy 12 yards from goal and the Pontyclun forward calmly fired the ball into the far corner of the net.

Three minutes later Pontyclun went further ahead when Craig Williams smashed the ball into the net from just inside the area. Midway through the half Clun had another chance to extend their lead when a Craig Williams free-kick was headed just over the bar by Tom Tweedy.

With the game effectively over as a contest and with the visitors offering little in the way of an attacking threat Pontyclun were content to play down the clock. In the 87th minute the Corries were reduced to 10 men when their goalkeeper received his marching orders after coming out of his area to strike Clun substitute Oli James who had just been involved in an incident after a bad tackle on a Corries player which resulted in him being awarded a yellow card.

This proved to be the final incident of the game and the final whistle sounded with Pontyclun winners of a somewhat tame encounter by three goals to nil.
